Elliptical trainers are one of the most recent innovations in the world of fitness equipment, combining many of the best features of other pieces of equipment.
What exactly is an elliptical trainer? It's a low-impact exercise machine that simulates walking or jogging. Its name comes from the "elliptical" motion the pedals follow when in use.
Many of today's elliptical trainers include moving support bars that allow you to work your upper body along with your lower body – a type of "cross-training".
And they provide an efficient workout without excessive pressure to your back and joints, which can be a real plus for middle aged and older users.
As more and more people awaken to the realization that exercise is a non-negotiable pre-requisite for a healthy and youthful life, elliptical trainers are rapidly moving center stage.
Why the Elliptical Trainer Has Become the #1 Selling Piece of Exercise Equipment
Elliptical trainers have become the most requested – and most purchased – piece of exercise equipment, even surpassing the ever-popular treadmill.
What's behind its massive appeal? Elliptical trainers…
- Offer a lower impact workout than treadmills
- Place less impact and stress to your ankles, knees and hip joints
- Pack a lot of fitness equipment into a relatively small space
- Provide an efficient total body workout, including all major muscle groups
- Deliver an indoor weight-bearing exercise
- Easy to use with a natural motion stride that simulates walking or jogging
And ellipticals offer health benefits, just like other forms of exercise equipment. They're versatile and user-friendly, too.
What a Suspension Elliptical Trainer Might Do For You
A suspension elliptical trainer takes the traditional elliptical to a whole new level, literally.
Suspended pedal arms help make your workout smoother and more comfortable, creating a true low-impact workout for your body. Some of the better quality suspension ellipticals create the feeling of working out on air!
Offering a complete, low-impact workout, suspension elliptical trainers can offer many exciting benefits. They may:
- Help increase or maintain flexibility
- Promote optimal circulation throughout your entire body
- Help maintain strength and endurance in leg, arm, and core muscles
- Help burn calories and promote an ideal body weight
- Help support cardiovascular fitness
- Slim and tighten arms, legs, thighs, butt, and abdomen
Just ask your doctor if an elliptical trainer is right for you.
Choosing the Elliptical That's Right for You
With the booming popularity of elliptical trainers, you have many choices in size, design, mechanics, features, and quality.
How do you go about selecting the one that's best for you?
Obviously, a major key to improving fitness is finding an exercise tool that is appropriate, safe and enjoyable for you. If a piece of equipment isn't comfortable, you may not want to use it often. And if it isn't somewhat enjoyable, you might be tempted to quit the fitness game altogether.
Please don't make the mistake that many individuals make – sacrificing quality in search of a "good" deal. Lower-end models may be cumbersome, unstable, noisy, and require frequent maintenance. In the end, you do get what you pay for!
It's important to balance quality and value when shopping for an elliptical trainer. A quality elliptical is something you'll use for many years. Skimp on the features that make it inviting and exciting to use and you may regret it in just a few short months when you begin to get bored or tired of exercise.
Here are good questions to ask yourself as you shop for a quality elliptical:
- Can it accommodate the weight of everyone in my household?
How durable is it? Make sure the elliptical is rated for the pre-workout weight of the heaviest person in your household. A quality elliptical can accommodate individuals weighing up to 350 or 400 pounds.
- Is it smooth and quiet when in use? What type of bearings does it have?
In my opinion, self-aligning sealed ball bearings at the pivot points are best as they require no lubrication and they help to provide years of smooth, quiet maintenance-free use. I recommend that you avoid machines with bushings as they may eventually break down and squeak. If the machine has 'standard' bearings, they'll need periodic cleaning and greasing.
- What type of foot pedals does it have?
The type of foot pedal can greatly influence your comfort level and the efficiency of your workouts. Look for foot pedals that allow your feet to remain flat throughout the elliptical foot path to distribute pressure throughout your entire foot. Ideally you want range of motion that works either in reverse or forward motions. Extra cushioning helps absorb any stress or shock from your workout.
- Are you trading size for durability?
Smaller, lighter weight elliptical trainers have become popular for apartment and home use, but unfortunately, most lightweight ellipticals are not designed for high intensity exercise. Using one for Peak Fitness exercises may tax your lightweight machine, making it less stable and likely requiring more maintenance. In my opinion, you should be sure to purchase a model that is designed for and can withstand the pressures of high-intensity exercise.
- Can it target specific muscle groups?
Do you have specific areas of your body that you'd like to tone, build and tighten? Can you make adjustments to the equipment or adjust how you use it to allow you to target those specific muscle groups?
- Does it provide a natural elliptical foot path?
Look at the shape of the foot path of the machine's ellipse. Is it a natural stride and foot path? Does the footplate adjust with the change in stride? Does the machine assure a proper range of motion and posture?
- Does it offer a variable workout?
Variety helps ensure that you'll keep exercising. Can you pedal forward and backwards? Can you change resistance, speed, incline, and intensity? How many and what types of programming options does it provide? Is it programmed for a high-intensity interval workout?
- Does it have a built-in heart rate monitor?
A heart rate monitor tracks your progress and gauges the intensity of the workout on your body. A chest strap monitor gives the most accurate heart rate reading. A contact heart rate monitor, while not quite as accurate as a telemetric chest monitor, is often built into the bars or grips. You'll get a more accurate heart rate reading if you take it while working your upper body.
- What's the manufacturer's warranty?
Be sure to check the warranty – they can fluctuate greatly upon model and manufacturer. In my opinion, you should look for at least a five- or ten-year (or ideally a lifetime) warranty on the frame and at least a two-year warranty coverage on labor, parts, and electronics as well.
Sprint 8 – The Perfect Fitness Solution – Found ONLY on Vision Fitness® Products
Now for some terrific news… Fitness expert and author Phil Campbell has professionally endorsed an outstanding line of exercise products – Vision Fitness®.
And not only has he endorsed this incredible line of products, his revolutionary Sprint 8 program is now found exclusively on Vision Fitness® products!
Vision Fitness has teamed up with Phil, the esteemed author of Ready, Set, Go! Synergy Fitness to develop an anaerobic Sprint 8 program. And now all you have to do is touch a button to experience the program.
Here are some of the potential benefits of using the Sprint 8 program on your Vision Fitness Suspension Elliptical Trainer:
- Each workout takes only 20 minutes
- Effective for nearly all ages and fitness levels
- Helps reduce body fat and tone muscle
- Boosts energy
- Improves speed and performance
And if you're over 30, Sprint 8 can be a powerful ally against somatopause, or your body's normal onset of weight gain, loss of muscle, and energy decline that often accompanies middle age.
Making Sprint 8 Your Partner in Fitness
Here's how the built-in Vision Fitness® Sprint 8 program works…
The Sprint 8 program consists of four minutes of sprint intervals - broken down into eight, quick 30-second segments - and 16 minutes of "active rest."
The program includes the following phases:
- The warm-up period gradually increases your heart rate, respiration, and the blood flow to working muscles.
- Interval training starts immediately after the warm-up with a 30-second sprint interval.
- Seven recovery intervals of 90 seconds will alternate with the eight 30-second sprint intervals. (The console will prompt you to increase your stride rate (rpm) during the sprint interval and decrease stride rate (rpm) during the recovery interval.)
- The cool-down period helps return your body's systems to resting levels.
The great part is… It takes only 20 minutes to complete the entire SPRINT 8 program!
And there's no guesswork on your part – the console tells you when to start, when to accelerate for a 'sprint', and when to slow down for your recovery interval. The reverse countdown helps keep you engaged and motivated.
Versatile… Smooth… Accessible… That Describes Vision Fitness Suspension Elliptical Trainers
For a home workout with ultimate variety and versatility, the S7200HRT features 24 levels of incline with variable stride and forward/backward pedaling capability. (The S70 has 20 levels.)
Adjustable stride allows you to simulate hills, increase intensity, and target different muscle groups with the touch of a button. And you never leave a comfortable, ergonomic position.
Pivoting or articulating footplates keep your knees and hip joints aligned.
Dual-action arms provide smooth upper-body movement, keeping you in a proper upright position. Multi-position hand grips allow different muscle emphasis and help avoid fatigue
Suspension Elliptical™ trainers are exceptionally smooth and comfortable, due to their unique suspension feature.
Because there is no rolling resistance, there's much less of the friction that can cause problems and noise over time.
Vision Fitness pioneered the friction-free magnetic resistance system with no wearing parts for maximum performance and durability.
When the resistance and incline levels are changed on the console, even during a workout, the transitions are smooth, gradual, and fluid. You even receive a lifetime warranty for home use on the magnetic brake.
Vision Fitness makes their Suspension Ellipticals easy and comfortable to use. The suspended pedal arms keep the footplates low to the ground so it's simple to mount.
The front-drive system places the motor and components up front and out of the way, so you can just step onto the machine and begin working out.
An exercise is key to an engaging workout, so they've included all the "creature comforts" like an integrated reading rack for newspapers and magazines, and space for your water bottle, TV remote, iPod, and cell phone.
Variety is key to an engaging workout, so you'll have instant access to Phil's exclusive 20-minute Sprint 8 anaerobic program, programs that target specific muscle groups, custom workouts, and heart rate training routines.
More "Best Buy" Awards Than Any Other Fitness Brand
Vision Fitness is the proud recipient of over 29 Best Buy awards for their fitness equipment. Recognized for their quality, these precision pieces also provide exceptional value for your money.
Of all the fitness lines out there, I can see why Phil Campbell chose to endorse Vision Fitness. Their quality, in my opinion, is second to none.
Vision Fitness began as a division of Trek® Bicycle Company, one of the world's largest manufacturers of quality outdoor bicycles. In 1996, Vision Fitness spun away to focus exclusively on fitness products. They continue to offer the same combination of quality, value, and performance that made their founding company the most requested bicycle brand in America.
All Vision Fitness® products are produced in plants that are ISO-certified, so you can be assured of consistent, quality construction that will give you many years of maintenance-free use.
Their warranties say it all… Vision Fitness Suspension Elliptical Trainers come with an amazing lifetime home use warranty on their frames, electromagnetic brakes, and generator systems (generator system on Model S70 only).
The home S7200HRT model includes a 5-year parts and electronics warranty, and 2-year warranty on labor.
The full commercial S70 model with its self-powered generator system includes a 5-year parts and electronics warranty, and 2 years labor.

Just a Word About Vision Fitness' Patented Perfect Stride™…
Not all Elliptical trainers are created equal… far from it.
After a tremendous amount of research on biomechanics and ergonomics, Vision Fitness designed their Suspension Elliptical™ trainers to include PerfectStride™ motion.
Unlike many other companies, Vision Fitness analyzed users at every incline angle and pedaling direction to make sure that the footplate would properly adjust with the change in stride – thus "Perfect Stride".
Along with PerfectStride™, Vision Fitness' Suspension Elliptical™ trainers have the most natural elliptical foot path on the market.
The shape of the ellipse creates a smooth and easy transition from the top of the ellipse,
where the muscles are relatively inactive, to the bottom of the ellipse, where the muscles
are activated to propel the user through the cycle.
The removal of the downward and forward force requirement, commonly found on traditional elliptical trainers, results in a workout that places greater emphasis on the muscles that extend the leg (the Glutes, Hamstrings, and Quads).
As a result, you get a more effective workout than with other cross-trainers.
PerfectStride™ also uses optimal stride adjustments to help you achieve a proper range of motion. As the incline angle changes, the stride length adjusts to keep your motion natural and fluid at the new angle.
Perhaps most importantly, PerfectStride™ ensures proper posture and proper alignment between your knee and hip joints.
Maintaining an upright posture is important because it removes emphasis from low back muscles and places it on leg muscles, where it belongs.
